Pitch: Features and 1-on-1 Interviews

What we want to see...

We are looking for inspiring, uplifting, motivational, lessons learned, perseverance, triumphant, resilience, goals accomplished, comeback stories, and positive world or community changing movements—tell us about something unique you’ve done or read, or report on a 1-on-1 interview you conducted with an amazing person. We want to hear your viewpoint(s) on your topics of interests as it pertains to our nine focal channels (motivation in the 9 areas of: personal, professional, business, entrepreneurship, finance, relationships, education, health and fitness, and service). That’s not all—we love bounce-back and come-back stories! Let us know how a story has impacted your journey or that of another person or why it is important to teach certain values, principles and life lessons to your child or employees at work. You’ve got the goods on a new positive movement in the motivation hemisphere? We’d love to know more about it! Or you can share tips which will help readers or teach them something new about self-care, career development, leadership, business, finances, relationships, and education. Being a motivational resource and empowerment magazine, we always veer towards pieces that are motivational and uplifting, and will prioritize those over others.

You may submit a Pitch to MOTIVATION at any time throughout the year, and submit as many separate pitches as you wish. With that said, below are the scheduled Themes and Pitch Submission Deadlines for MOTIVATION magazine's 2020 Quarterly Issues:

Spring Issue

Theme: Delivering Hope

Pitch Submission Deadline: Wednesday, December 18, 2019

Summer Issue

Theme: Winning Against All Odds

Pitch Submission Deadline: Wednesday, March 18, 2020

Fall Issue

Theme: Selling in Tough Times

Pitch Submission Deadline: Wednesday, June 17, 2020

Winter Issue

Theme: Leading a Significant Life

Pitch Submission Deadline: Wednesday, September 16, 2020

Before you pitch, visit our website and see the kind of featured stories and 1-on-1 interview pieces we have commissioned to get an idea of what we like. This also gives you an idea of what not to pitch to us as we are not looking to repeat specific themes or titles we’ve published within the past 6-12 months. So, yes, feel free to pitch to us about motivation, attitude and success, but not about the dichotomy between politics and astronomy.

Make sure that your pitch is well thought-out, researched, and above all, original.

Your pitch must follow these guidelines to be considered. We will immediately reject any pitch which does not do so.

1. A 50 word summary of what you want to write about in your proposed feature or 1-on-1 interview of an amazing person, and why our readers will be interested in it.

2. 3 proposed titles for the piece.

3. Is it a:

feature (650 - 1,200 words) – These are typically articles which require some research, engagement (interviews), and are analytical. They could focus on an A-List or B-List celebrity/entertainer/sports figure, a newsworthy person, an author, a motivational or inspirational event/cause, awards or high achievements, or talk about a positive developments or movement. These are not feature or report type articles on yourself or your organization - done by you - to self-promote or get the word out about what you're doing or trying to do in your community, cause, or the world. Take a look at our features on our website to find out more.

1-on-1 interview (550 - 850 words) – 1-on-1 interviews are usually personal in nature. Your chosen person and approach for a 1-on-1 interview must link back to the purpose, feel and mission of MOTIVATION magazine. You may use a traditional interview article writing format or a press release interview/reporters format when writing. It will be a big plus in your favor if you tie and link the angle of your 1-on-1 interview to one of our upcoming quarterly publication themes. For a better understanding, take a look at our 1-on-1 interviews on our website.

4. Send us 3 writing samples of previously published work. In case you have not previously published a piece, you can send us unpublished samples as well. Include links to the published pieces or upload the documents to Google Drive and share the link with us. Do not send us Word Documents or attached files.

5. In the body of your email, tell us a little bit about you. We do not want your resume. We want to know who you are as a person, and why writing and possibly having your writing published on MOTIVATION magazine's website is important to you.

6. Send all this information inside the body of your pitch email. Do not send us Word Documents or attached files.

Pitch: Articles

What we want to see...

We are looking for short articles that are inspiring, substantive (with usable practical strategies and tactics; not fluff or laced with deliberate 'come buy my product or services' sales pitches), motivational, lessons learned, empowering, and how-to content—tell us about something unique you’ve done or read. We need and want you to teach us something of quality, and encourage us to do and achieve better results as a result of following your teaching points. We want to hear your viewpoint(s) on your topics of interests as it pertains to our nine focal channels (motivation in the 9 areas of: personal, professional, business, entrepreneurship, finance, relationships, education, health and fitness, and service). Share updated tips which will help readers or teach them something new about personal development, professional development, career development, leadership, business, finances, relationships, education, health, fitness, and service. Being a motivational resource and empowerment magazine, we always veer towards pieces that are motivational and deliver clear how-to takeaways, and will prioritize those over others.

Pitch: Book Reviews

What we want to see...

We are looking for high-quality thorough and honest book reviews of books in the following genre: self-help, empowerment, inspiration, business, sales, motivational, leadership, health and fitness, finance, service or volunteering, or organizational development or workforce development. If the book and book review you're looking to pitch does not fit any of the above genres, your pitch will be immediately rejected. If your book and book review does fit what we're looking for and want, tell us about something unique you learned by reading your chosen book, discuss your take on the author's intentions, and give us your overall honest evaluation of the book. We do not want a blatant sales pitch for a book—we want and expect a legitimate and useful content rich book review for our readers. You can share tips which will help readers or teach them something new about the topic area and genre of the book. Being a motivational resource and empowerment magazine, we always veer towards books that are motivational, inspirational, business, leadership and empowerment focused, and will prioritize those over others.

Before you pitch, visit our website and see the kind of book reviews we have commissioned to get an idea of what we like. This also gives you an idea of what not to pitch to us as we are not looking to repeat reviews of the same books or themes we’ve published within the past 6-12 months. So, yes, feel free to pitch to us your book review ideas that fit what our readers come to read and grow from again and again.

Make sure that your pitch is well thought-out, researched, and above all, original.

Your pitch must follow these guidelines to be considered. We will immediately reject any pitch which does not do so.

1. A 50 word summary of what you want to write about in your proposed book review, and why our readers will be interested in it.

2. The title of your chosen book with 3 proposed titles for your book review.

3. Include title, author, publisher, publication date, edition, pages, special features (maps, etc.), price, ISBN.

4. It is a:

book review (450-800 words) – A book review is an in-depth analysis of the text of a book; an examination of its contents. Its purpose is not to rehash the story, but to evaluate the value of it and recommend the book to the reader, or not. Guidelines to Help You: Hook the reader with your opening sentence. Set the tone of the review. Be familiar with the guidelines -- some editors want plot summaries; others don't. Some want you to say outright if you recommend a book, but not others. Review the book you read -- not the book you wish the author had written. If this is the best book you have ever read, say so -- and why. If it's merely another nice book, say so. Include information about the author-- reputation, qualifications, etc. -- anything relevant to the book and the author's authority. Think about the person reading your review. Is this a librarian buying books for a collection? A business executive who wants a good up-to-date book on effective leadership? Is the review for readers looking for information about a particular topic, or for readers searching for a self-empowerment good read? Your conclusion should summarize, perhaps include a final assessment. Do not introduce new material at this point.

Our readers look for and expect a quality honest and insightful 'Book Review' not a 'Book Report.'

Book Report vs. Book Review

It is important to know the difference between a book report and a book review. If your teacher assigns a book review and you turn in a book report, your grade will probably not be very good. Following is an explanation of the two:

• A book report is a summary and its structure is simpler than a book review. It gives information about the author and his background to help the reader understand a bit about the author's perspective. It also gives a brief summary of the story and may include details about the plot, characters, and setting. It is an objective re-telling of the story.

• A book review, on the other hand, is an in-depth analysis of the text; an examination of its contents. Its purpose is not to rehash the story, but to evaluate the value of it and recommend the book to the reader, or not. A book review gives the opinions of the writer and includes his personal views. A review will include an analysis of the author's intent, thematic elements, and symbolism.

5. Send us 2 writing samples of previously published book reviews. In case you have not previously published a book review, you can send us 2 unpublished samples as well. Include links to the published pieces or upload the documents to Google Drive and share the link with us. Do not send us Word Documents or attached files.

6. In the body of your email, tell us a little bit about you. We do not want your resume. We want to know who you are as a person, and why writing book reviews and possibly having your writing published on MOTIVATION magazine's website is important to you.

7. Send all this information inside the body of your pitch email. Do not send us Word Documents or attached files.
