MOTIVATION - Winter 2012 Issue - Publisher's Letter by Ty Howard

People often say that motivation doesn't last. Zig Ziglar, world renowned motivational speaker, made a difference that impacted the world forever through motivation. He profoundly informed the world, "Motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing—that's why we recommend it daily." Hence, Motivation Is—As Motivation Does!

In this inaugural issue of MOTIVATION, we are discussing the theme The Pursuit of Motivation: Getting and Staying Motivated. You do not have to make a global impact to get and stay motivated. I also do not believe that anyone reaches and stays motivated one hundred percent of the time. When it comes to motivation, we all have days when we are highly motivated to take on the world and days when we are unmotivated to do anything. The challenge for many of us is learning effective ways to pick ourselves back up when we have unmotivated days to once again pursue and capture higher levels of motivation.

I believe that we are always pursuing motivation. There are two types of motivation, Internal and External. Internal motivation is driven by the desire to fulfill a need within oneself. For example, a person may be motivated to do charity work because he believes it would make him feel useful and productive. External motivation consists of things like monetary rewards, pep talks or praise. As an example, a person may be motivated by a pay rise if he/she reaches or exceeds a set target. Whichever works best for you, we all fall into the essence of the African Proverb which states, "Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed and eaten. Every morning in Africa, a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle... when the sun comes up, you’d better be running." There you have it... The Pursuit of Motivation!

Think of a former boss, teacher, colleague, college roommate, neighbor, high school classmate, family member or friend, etc. Each of them woke up each day either motivated or unmotivated. Their emotional state, depending on how much time they spent with and around you, had some impact on your level of motivation. Just as your level of motivation will have an impact on the countless people you spend time with and around today, yourself included. Your pursuit and daily level of motivation can help you and others to improve or cause you grief and bring you down.

Why do we pursue motivation so hard? Why do we need it to succeed? Often, our greatest, innermost motivation is rooted in wanting to improve ourselves so that we can in-turn better contribute to and provide for our family. We ultimately seek continuous motivation so we can wake up each morning with the right mindset, enthusiasm and energy to create better opportunities and a way of living for a positive and brighter future for everyone we care about and love.

This issue of MOTIVATION is dedicated to help you to get and stay motivated. We want to help you to find your motivation and use it; pursue your motivation and happiness; get motivated to get your finances in order; leap beyond your motivation barriers; get and stay motivated; and to experience more of life’s greatest rewards—a life of better health, balance, relationships, significance, harmony, potential, service, and prosperity.

As we get going and growing in the New Year, I wish you days filled with the highest levels of motivation, productivity and good health! Let’s move confidently forward in our individual pursuit of motivation, knowing and embracing the ideal that Motivation Is—As Motivation Does!
