The fight for social justice and inclusion is almost as old as America's history. Starting with the fight against slavery, the Jim Crow era, 1950's civil rights era, and the current Black Lives Matter movement (#BLM). Slavery may have ended with the declaration of independence by Abraham Lincoln, but as well all know that discrimination and racism did not. Discrimination and racism instead went the mainstream and became entrenched in society through institutional discrimination, which has had a detrimental effect on the American minority's lives.

When Colin Kaepernick took the knee during the singing of the national anthem in football matches, he inadvertently created an uproar with everyone having an opinion on his kneeling, which had even President Trump chiming in. The majority of white America was up in arms. They were against his kneeling and claimed he was disrespecting the flag and the veteran community who had fought for the country, focusing on his kneeling social justice taking a back seat. He blackballed was in the NFL and end up losing his football career.

Colin Kaepernick would later be thrust back into the limelight in 2020 following a spree of murders of African Americans by the Police. Anyone who watched the murder of George Floyd was greatly affected and led to protest across the nation demanding change and reform in the police forces and justice systems throughout America.

Following these protests, many businesses and organizations have pledged to be more inclusive and be at the front line championing social justice. All Businesses and organizations need to assess whether they are practicing social justice and have a diverse workforce. Here is a list of pointers that any organization or business can use for your organizational assessment assessment of social justice and inclusion:

Diverse Workforce

Does your organization employ people from diverse backgrounds, be it ethnicity, religion, age, gender, and education? Employing a diverse workforce provides your organization with a rich knowledge of different cultures and expands its reach. This hiring effort also builds tolerance and understanding in society.

Inclusive Environment

Does your business/organization offer an inclusive environment? One way to ensure that you are inclusive is by creating a welcoming, culturally, and socially accepted. Something as simple as not restricting African American hairstyles goes a long way in creating a welcoming environment.

Opening Up The Business Market

Does your business/organization cater to a diverse clientele? Opening your business to a diverse market base goes a long way in creating an equal society and widening your profit margin.

Conflict Resolution

How does your organization/business handle disagreement and strife in the workforce? The way your organization handles conflict in the workplace sets the tone for social justice within the workforce. Conflicts should be handled fairly and justly with no room for any discrimination cases arising.

Company Culture

What is the culture within your organization? Having a company culture that is inclusive to everyone working within the organization goes a long way in checking unconscious bias within the workforce and creating a more aware and diversity accepting culture.
